Fostoria Community Schools already has in place

FOSTORIA - Fostoria Community Schools already has in place some of the activities Gov. Ted Strickland's education plan outlines. The state's top executive visited Fostoria High School Monday, three days after signing the state's budget, which included the education plan. Strickland said some of the things the school already is doing are things he is suggesting officials ought to see happen across the state. He said he understands the district has had all-day kindergarten for the past four years, and it has required seniors to do a senior project for almost 10 years. Strickland said he has suggested officials need to incorporate the idea of seniors being required to do a senior project in order to graduate. "Thank you for being a trendsetter there," he said. The governor said Ohio is a large and diverse state, and its economy is diverse, too. "Coming up with ... an education plan that fits the entire state has been very difficult because every community tends to have its own unique problems, personalities, and so we have been working for the last couple of years to try to reach out to the people in our state," he said. Monday morning, Strickland shared highlights of his education plan, which has six components. The first, he said, is an attempt to modernize classrooms and the curriculum people offer students. "We must prepare our students for success in life and prepare them for the jobs of the 21st century, and in order to do that, I think we must continue to teach the core subjects, and those subjects are courses like math and science and English, those subjects that are foundational to success in nearly any career," he said. "We must go beyond that, though. I believe we must teach those things that the business community tell us they are looking for when they want to hire someone."
