Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai (ROCK ON) Her foray into the big screen was much welcomed with ROCK ON. An unconventional way to begin her Bollywood innings, what with playing the part of a married woman and no romantic angle per se, Prachi Desai was courageous enough to take a plunge into a film that had a director (Abhishek Kapoor) with a flop tag (ARYAN - THE UNBREKABLE) to his name. Still, with people like Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy attached to the project, she got herself a start with ROCK ON. The ploy worked and how! With a restrained performance, she was the person who got a certain 'thehrav' to the rocking proceedings of ROCK ON. The million dollar question is - 'Will she be able to be a part of the glam brigade from here on?'

Ehsaas Channa

Ehsaas Channa (PHOONK) The youngest of the lot, Ehsaas impressed one and all with her performance of a girl who was possessed due to black magic at work. Coming up with one of the most intense performances of the year, Ehsaas was a revelation as a girl actor after working in quite a few films where she was required to portray a boy. One wonders how she would have worked upon her psyche after being a part of cinema where her character was required to go through tumultuous times. Director Ram Gopal Varma yet again succeeded in extracting a brilliant performance out of an actor and one now looks forward to how this girl would announce her arrival as a lead actress a decade from now.

Adah Sharma (1920)

Adah Sharma (1920) It was the year when possessed females made an impression on the big screen. If Ehsaas was psyched, Adah Sharma was indeed scary, what with her character being almost a cannibal in appeal. Made to play a part which could turn violent, riotus, frightened and ferocious at regular intervals, Adah surprised in this horror flick by Vikram Bhatt. Not just she helped the director break the jinx of a dozen odd flops that he had delivered before 1920; she also announced an arrival, albeit a low key, to Bollywood. Though she was mostly non-glam in 1920 and was made to wear the costumes that were in vogue a century ago, one looks forward to see her look entirely different in the upcoming films of hers that are set in contemporary times.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu (RACE, BACHNA AE HASEENO) While newcomers like Prachi, Adah and Asin were busy knocking the doors of Bollywood, Bipasha Basu continued her femme fatale act in films like RACE and BACHNA AE HASEENO. She proved that girls would be girls and women would be women! No wonder, she approached her part in RACE with such style and sensibilities that one didn't mind her playing the gray character at all. Some more sizzling dance numbers later, she was the darling of RACE. As for BACHNA AE HASEENO, she was indeed such a fantastic person that one wouldn't mind being her slave at all, as did Ranbir Kapoor in the film.

Kajol

Kajol (U ME AUR HUM) It's a pity that U ME AUR HUM didn't go the distance that it deserved. Though the film did reasonably well at the box office, one would have expected much more buzz around Kajol's act in the film. As a troubled woman suffering from Alzheimer disease, she was near perfect in the film which was directed by her husband Ajay Devgan. The usual spunk was missing from her performance, as per the demand of her character since she was required to be all tense and pensive for most of the film's duration. As for her future films too, expect some more serious/meaningful/hard hitting characters to be played by her, something that she seems to be opting for considering her status of being a 'veteran' actor already.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma (RAB NE BANA DI JODI) It is not every day that one sees a debutant leading lady being offered an author backed role in a commercial Yash Raj film outing where she is seen in almost every frame of the film. This way Anushka Sharma was really lucky since she didn't just get an opportunity to be a part of a film which told a new story and allowed her to display her acting talent; it also made her stand next to Shah Rukh Khan in almost every scene. Anushka grabbed the opportunity provided to her with both hands and went all out in coming up with a sparkling act. Add to that her modeling background and some good dancing skills and we could be looking at yet another star material in the offering.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra (FASHION, DOSTANA) And this would well be the comeback of the year! With as many as six flops behind her - SALAAM E ISHQ, BIG BROTHER, LOVE STORY 2050, CHAMKU, DRONA, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO - any other actress would have just given up. But not Priyanka Chopra who just looked at FASHION and DOSTANA as the opportunities that could bring her back into the reckoning. While most of her flops were long in the making, she concentrated completely on these two films which promised to present in a different light altogether. While Madhur Bhandarkar gave her an author backed role in FASHION, Karan Johar ensured that she turned out to be the scorcher of the year with DOSTANA. She impressed on both the counts, whether it was acting (FASHION) or looking beautiful (DOSTANA) and announced loud and clear - 'I Am Back'.

TAMILNADU TEMPLES

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Location: Almost 8 Kilometers from the Varanasi Station near Lanka Ideal Time to Visit: Anytime round the year
Attraction: Statues
How to Reach: Hire a cab or Auto from the hotel or take a rickshaw if you happen to stay in the vicinity.

The Vishwanath temple is synonymous to Varanasi. Vishwanath Temple is the most sacred and the most famous temple in Varanasi. In fact, Vishwanath Temple is extremely popular in other parts of India too. A considerable chunk of foreign visitors in India come to Varanasi every year to get a glimpse of the Vishwanath Temple even though the followers of Semitic religions are not allowed to enter the sanctum of the temple.

The history of Vishwanath Temple that is also called Golden Temple at times is full of ups and downs. The temple and city has always been on the receiving end of the invaders be it Afghans, Turks, Rohila or Marathas. The temple has been built and razed to the ground several times in the history. It was first destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in the 13th century and was later rebuild. Emperor Akbar donated several acres of villages to the trust that was later cut down substantially by Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb was a fundamentalist who hated every possible religion and sects in India including Sufi and Shiite order among the Muslims. Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore built the present temple that stands in Varanasi, in the year 1776. Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore donated the 800-kilogram Gold-plating of the towers that gives the temple its colloquial name.

Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer of worlds and the presiding deity of the city. It is said and believed that Varanasi is the spot at which the first 'Jyotirlinga' broke through the earth's crust and flared towards the heaven. Lord Shiva did this in order to take the final call in the war of supremacy among the Hindu Gods. Next to the temple is the Well of Knowledge where, as legend goes, the original Shiva lingam lies hidden. More than the Ghats and even the Ganges, the Shiva lingam installed in the temple remains the devotional focus of Varanasi.

Naan Kadavul

Naan Kadavul Review
Justify FullAfter three years of tough schedules of shooting and changes in the casting, Bala’s Naan Kadavul will be releasing this month. As usual, completely removed from the commercial potboilers, Naan Kadavul is here to deliver another strong message to the audiences. It comes with the tag-line ‘Aham Brahmaasmi’. Arya plays the role of a ‘Sadhu’ and Pooja is a poor girl in the film. Major part of the shooting has been carried out in Kasi. Naan Kadavul is an Ilayaraja musical.

‘Amma Un Pillai’ is the highlight of the album. The song’s tune and tempo are remade from one of Ilayaraja’s earlier hits ‘Amma Un Kovilil’. S. Janaki’s classic, all-time favourite rendition is replicated by Sadhana Sargam and the singer does her best. The silky timbre in her voice itself delivers the exact feel. Shreya Goshal’s ‘Kannil Paarvai’ too creates a sombre mood. Shreya’s slow yet emotion-filled singing makes us lie back, close our eyes and drink in the deep feeling in the tune as well as the lyrics. ‘Maatha Un Kovilil’ by Madhumitha is a rehash of the same old tune along with the lyrics. The difference between the original and the new version is the change in the assortment of instruments Ilayaraja has chosen for the BGM.
Movie Story
For spiritual and astrological change, a far drive his son home. Tamilnadu boy go and take refuge in Kasi. At the same time, realizing his folly, far goes looking for her son to Varanasi. Arya growing up in the middle of Saadhu and Sanyasins and become one with long hair and bloody appearance. Shocked to see his son in such a condition that he decides to end his return to his hometown. Read More Information
Ilayaraja’s music will be a great adornment to Naan Kadavul. The exquisite music and the meaningful lyrics prepare us well to absorb the intense theme of the film.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ sweeps Baftas

LONDON: Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle’s plucky take on Mumbai’s slum-children, on Sunday glided over the last hump on its unstoppable march to the Oscars after it swept the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, or Baftas. Here it won seven major awards including for best film, best direction and A.R. Rahman’s music. The Baftas are regarded as a dress-rehearsal for the big Hollywood event.

“Unbelievable again!” quipped Rahman, who won a Golden Globe for his score barely a few weeks ago.

The film, which was nominated in 11 categories, also won the Baftas for best adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing and sound. This brought its tally of international awards to nearly 50.

The only other Indian, apart from Rahman, to receive a Bafta was Resul Pookutty for sound along with Glenn Freemantle, Richard Pryke, Tom Sayers, Ian Tapp.

However, neither Dev Patel, the teenage “hero” of the film who was nominated for best actor, nor Freida Pinto, the “heroine” tipped for best supporting actress, made it. Both had their moments, though, when they were called to the stage to present the award for best costume.

Earlier, young Patel joked about having been nominated at all saying he was surprised. “I can’t believe it. Please someone slap me,” he said.

Born and brought up in Britain, he seemed happy to be simply back on his “home turf” and appeared to revel in being at the centre of so much attention.

The most important event in Britain’s movie calendar was so dominated by Slumdog Millionaire that some of Hollywood’s biggest offerings were almost reduced to the also-ran category.

Critics reckoned the film won an award every 20 minutes, and punters reportedly lost some £I million, having put money on SDM’s rivals.

One of the biggest surprises of the evening was SDM beating its strong Hollywood contender, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt. For films like The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Doubt losing to SDM appeared unfair to some, who attributed its success to “media hype.”

Boyle called it a triumph for the spirit of the people of Mumbai. He regretted that some people in India had objected to the term “slumdog.” He added: “I’m disappointed. It was meant in an aspirational way.”

Saina and Chetan Anand pull out

INDORE: Even before the first shuttle is hit in the National badminton championship, beginning at the Abhay Prashal indoor stadium on Tuesday, the organisers and lovers of the sport are in for a disappointment.

Defending champions Chetan Anand and Saina Nehwal, the one who would have been the star of the championship for the sheer weight of her achievements thus far, have pulled out.

An official word was not there as was indicative from the routine pre-championship press conference on Monday when the Madhya Pradesh Badminton Association Secretary, Anil Choughule, only detailed the arrangements made for the Rs. 60-lakh budgeted event, being held here for the first time, and the high expectations of some top quality competition over the next nine days and chief referee Muralidharan dwelt on the technical aspects.

New champions

In the absence of two top world-level players — one ranked 10th (Saina) and the other 13th — this Nationals is assured of one thing — two new champions.

Will it be fifth-time lucky for Aravind Bhat or can Anup Sridhar, on a comeback, regain it? Will it be Trupti Murgunde (because promising Aditi Mutatkar is unlikely to play because of injury) or junior champion Sikky Reddy in the women’s section? The field is wide open.
