Hybrid Cars Advantages and Disadvantages

Author: Hilal Abdelwali

Hybrid cars are considered as the car of the future. It is able to effectively conserve fuel and at the same time, it only produces low levels of toxic fumes. Because of these benefits, hybrid cars are now growing in popularity every single day. Many people are now considering getting rid of their conventional cars and purchase a hybrid car to help in cutting fuel consumption cost.

Hybrid cars have two engines for it to effectively conserve fuel consumption. It has the traditional gasoline engine and it also has an electric motor and batteries. The two engines work together in order to cut fuel consumption. With this technology, you will be able to cut fuel usage by more than half. Just imagine, with a hybrid car, you will be able to go more than 60 miles to the gallon. With this kind of savings, hybrid cars are definitely the car of the future.

Hybrid car owners virtually do not feel the increasing cost in fuel prices. This is the main advantage of the hybrid car. There are other advantages that a hybrid car can give you. Recently, the President of the United States has signed an agreement that hybrid car buyers will be able to enjoy tax incentives. This means that by owning a hybrid car, you will be able to save money on taxes.

There are other benefits that the government imposes on hybrid car owners, such as free parking, and free entry to car pool lanes. Some even offer discounted fees on toll gates.

The braking in hybrid cars is also configured to capture the energy released and uses it to charge the batteries inside the hybrid car. This means that unlike electric cars, hybrid cars do not actually need to be charged from your home electric outlet.

However, with all the advantages that a hybrid car can give you, there are also disadvantages. The main disadvantage of hybrid cars is that the retail price is quite expensive. Only people who have enough money can purchase hybrid cars. However, the twist in all this is that hybrid cars are actually cheaper when compared to conventional cars in the long run. If you compute the total fuel consumption of both cars, you will actually see that you can save a lot more money on hybrid cars.

The only thing is that hybrid cars are expensive right from the car lot.

Hybrid cars are relatively heavy because of the heavy batteries installed inside the car. This is why hybrid car manufacturers integrates smaller internal combustion engines and are constructed with light materials and should be aerodynamic in order to maximize efficiency. This means that hybrid cars can never really go fast.

Another issue about hybrid cars is that it is very risky in accidents. What makes a hybrid car work effectively is also what makes it risky if it ever gets involved in an accident. This is because hybrid cars stores high amount of voltage in its batteries. This means that there is a high chance of getting electrocuted when you get involved in an accident. This also means that it is relatively difficult for rescuers to get the drivers and passengers out of the hybrid cars because of the dangers of high voltage in the car.

These are the advantages and the disadvantages of hybrid cars. Car manufacturers today are now looking for ways to get rid of the disadvantages of hybrid cars. In the near future, you will see that hybrid cars will be lighter and also contains less risk due to high voltage dangers.

Americans much better automobiles

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT: Henry Ford started at the beginning of the last century with four wheels and a running board; 1908 was the birth of American car culture. That same year, General Motors was formed in Flint, Michigan. It wasn't until 1925 when the "Big Three" was complete with the formation of Chrysler Corporation.
JOHN DAVIS, HOST, MOTORWEEK: When the Big Three emerged, they not only emerged as rivals that really gave Americans much better automobiles at the time, but they also cemented the American automobile as a world standard.
ROMANS: "As goes General Motors, so goes the nation." That phrase defined America's economic power for much of the last century.
PETER MORICI, ECONOMIST, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND: So many folks were either employed at General Motors or the other two major car makers, making steel and all the other components that go into cars. It just meant that if the automobile companies were prospering, the country was prospering, too.
ROMANS: Today, there are 74,000 rank-and-file GM workers in the U.S. But in its heyday, GM was the largest industrial company in the world; a technology leader. By 1979, 600,000 people worked for GM. Those good jobs helped build America's middle class.
DAVIS: It also allowed us to migrate out from the cities to have the quarter lot in a suburb, to basically get away from a lot of the congestion of the metropolitan areas.

A lakeside celebrations of automobiles

A shared anniversary for a legendary display and BMW led to double the fun at Lake Como, writes Bob Montgomery
A UNIQUE PLATFORM for the most beautiful automobiles from the past as well as some of the boldest concept cars from the present, the 80th annual Concorso d’Eleganza took place in the glorious location of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este and the Villa Erba in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como.
This year’s event was a double anniversary, for sponsor BMW Group was also celebrating 80 years since it produced its first automobile, giving rise to several special displays of BMW cars at the event.
Also celebrated at the Concorso D’Eleganza was 100 years of the Bugatti and Morgan marques.
As expected, Bugatti Automobiles SAS displayed a range of examples of this most famous of marques, from the “Tank” Grand Prix car to the last Bugatti Atlantic 57SC built – which is owned by Ralph Lauren.
Four special models of the Bugatti Veyron were also displayed, finished in the racing colours – blue for France, red for Italy, green for Britain and white for Germany.
The four supercars were displayed in front of signs with the names and racing histories of four drivers closely identified with Bugatti’s racing success.
One of the surprising aspects of the Concorso d’Eleganza is the very high proportion of cars that have been in the possession of the same family since new.
This sets it apart from that other great Concours d’Elegance event, Pebble Beach in California, where the cars are predominantly in the hands of rich collectors, and reinforces the sense of “old wealth” that predominates the Italian event.
Indeed, speaking to several such owners, the overall impression gained is not so much of a great motoring event as one that marks the commencement of the “season”.
The cars on display were subject to a pre-selection process so that only six examples were displayed in each class.
Very much the crème de la crème – and what a selection! A small number of the most interesting included a Mercedes 500K from 1936, which had until recently been part of the collection of Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, a spectacular yellow Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 Sedanca Town Car from 1933 similar to the model in the film The Yellow Rolls-Royce, and a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso model from 1963, which was for a long time owned by the actor Steve McQueen.
