Teachers can call in and access information

Chennai (PTI): The latest in mobile technology will soon help teachers across the country enhance their teaching skills by providing them access to a whole host of information on their respective subjects through their cellphones.
The system, an initiative of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) under the HRD Ministry and the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), involves developing a database with course details in various formats, including presentation and animation.
"This database can be accessed by a mobile phone through satellite communication to get required information," NITTTR Director S. Mohan told PTI here.
The system is expected to be launched in the next six months, he said, adding that the database and other related software, created by a group of experts, would also have comprehensive course contents in various subjects.
Mr. Mohan said this technology would be gradually introduced for students also, the objective being to make them well conversant with the new technology, thereby creating their own innovative learning resources.
"In fact, such a facility for students will provide information on subjects, career guidance and much more. This is an age of technology. We are working for convergence of technology for enhancing the quality of education," he said.
Vasudha Kamat, Joint Director of Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) of NCERT, said CIET had recently conducted 'Educational Technology Lecture Series' across India and found almost all teachers who attended it had mobiles. Taking the cue, CIET planned to use mobile technology in big way soon to enhance teachers knowledge, she said.
The NCERT also plans to create a mobile phone portal at CIET, where a database of teachers across India would be entered. It would work on the same lines as the railway ticket booking system through mobile phones. Teachers can call in and access information.

Indian government should develop an educational curriculum

Washington (PTI): Calling for the need to focus on science education at high school level, eminent scientist and nobel laureate Sydney Altman has suggested Indian government to develop a curriculum with a view to encourage kids towards innovation.
According to Mr. Altman, India is focusing too much on scientific research at high level and has been ignoring science education at school level, which he argues is not good for the scientific health of the country in the long run.
"Focus of the Indian Government should be on science education in high schools. This is something which has to be looked into in great detail by the government. You just can't take about science and innovation. You got to encourage kids outside of their restrictive curriculum in schools," said Mr. Altman, who got Chemistry Nobel in 1989 for his work on the catalytic properties of RNA.
"I am not talking about villages and rural areas (where there is not much of an education infrastructure), even in small towns and large cities, many students graduate from college with very high percentage levels and grades, but they do not know what to do with them after that," Mr. Altman told PTI.
The Sterling Professor of Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology at the Yale University said that the Indian government should develop an educational curriculum which helps the younger generation and the school going kids develop the basics of innovation.

Imminent increase in interest rates.

The bloodletting in longer-term Treasurys may finally ebb amid a growing feeling that better economic data could spur the Federal Reserve to raise rates sooner than expected to stem inflation.
A push to the key 4% level for the 10-year yield as soon as this week, however, isn't out of the question. The 10-year yield hit 3.91% Friday after a better-than-expected May jobs report, before finishing at 3.861%, up 0.385 percentage point on the week. Rates could rise further heading into the government's sales this week of $19 billion in reopened 10-year notes and $11 billion in 30-year paper. But a jump much higher is unlikely for a while.
"There are probably few reasons for 10-year yields to rise to significantly higher levels," said Colin Lundgren, head of institutional fixed income at RiverSource Investments in Minneapolis. "People are feeling better about inflation. I don't think the threat is such that yields will go wild here."
Rising inflation hurts long-dated Treasurys as higher prices eat into the fixed returns, but longer-term securities become much more attractive to investors in times of low inflation.
The pressure on yields could switch to the short end if suspicions continue to increase that policy makers might be thinking about a more imminent increase in interest rates. Late Friday, the two-year yield stood at 1.307%, up 0.377 percentage point on the week after the number of jobs lost in May was far fewer than economists had expected.
"People are starting to question whether the Fed will for sure be on hold for the next two years," said Carl Lantz, a fixed-income strategist at Credit Suisse in New York. "Doubt is starting to creep in and I think rightly so."

Wait lossing tips & News

GM - the biggest car manufacturer in the world until last year - will file for bankruptcy in the US courts as it seeks to restructure its stricken operations.
Lord Mandelson assured workers again today that the Government has been given a commitment about production continuing in the UK by Canadian car parts maker Magna International, which has signed a memorandum of understanding to buy the Vauxhall and Opel brands.
But the minister said the prospective buyers will now take time to study Vauxhall's books in a process of due diligence which he said could take up to two months.
"I understand the fears and uncertainty of Vauxhall's workforce but I am afraid we have to be patient," he told Sky News.
Lord Mandelson said he will be holding more talks with Magna and pledged that the Government was prepared to underwrite any future restructuring.
The minister also took a swipe at the leadership of the Unite union, accusing officials of "misrepresenting" the Government's position and creating "needless fears" among the workers.
Unite's joint leader Tony Woodley repeated his veiled criticism of the Government's efforts today, saying he would feel more confident about the future of the two UK plants if ministers had been sitting at the negotiating table.

Cell phone awarness

"I'm here" - two little words that sat in the inbox of one of our cell phones as we prepared to write this column.
This particular message came from a friend we met the prior evening. The room was crowded and she wanted to let us know, "I'm here."
Today, it seemed another woman wanted to tell us the same thing.
Her story is a little different. She is a survivor of rape. One so brutal she was torn apart — both physically and emotionally. The rape also succeeded in tearing apart her family, her village and now her country — the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Most people don't speak to this woman now. There's a lot of stigma attached to being raped by the soldiers of the rebel army controlling her region. The army is powerful, funded by the sale of minerals like tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold. Minerals that are shipped to Asia, made into electronic goods and sold to us in the form of cell phones.
Today, she sent us a message - "I'm here."
This woman's story is not unique. In fact, about 1,100 rapes like hers are reported every month in her country, with countless more going unheard. Despite the United Nations naming the DRC the most dangerous place on earth to be a woman, little action has been taken to reverse this foreboding moniker.

Tata motors operating Lease

Operating Lease
Tata Motors also plans to introduce new financing options for buyers of these trucks. "We would be looking at initiatives like operating leasing, which is not there in the market right now. We are in talks with a number of operating leasing companies and details have to be worked out," he said.
The company believes operating leasing will do the trick as far as attracting customers is concerned.
Here, the financier leases the asset (vehicle) to a customer and recovers only a part of its value through lease rentals. The asset remains on the books of the financier. Unlike financial leasing, at the end of the lease period the customer is not obligated to buying the vehicle from the leasing company.
"Generally, the tenure of truck loans is three to five years, depending on the lifetime of the vehicle. However, the World Truck range is more durable and we do not see a problem with lenders offering longer tenure loans of even seven years plus. We are yet to start talks with banks though," said Pisharody.

The Competition
It will be interesting to see how World Truck stands up to offerings from Volvo and Mercedes Benz. Swedish truck maker Scania and MAN of Germany (through an alliance with Force Motors) also have big plans for India.
Tata Motors will hope that the comparative advantage in terms of acquisition cost and operating expenditure will help its products get the lead in market share. "Low lifecycle cost will be our USP. Fuel accounts for about 60 per cent of the operating cost of a truck. Interest and acquisition costs are the other factors. We have an advantage on all fronts," added Ramakrishnan.

World’s largest passenger terminal complex

Twenty-nine years ago, Mayor Maynard Jackson opened what was then the world’s largest passenger terminal complex. Since then, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has focused on the future. Our efficient terminal layout and parallel runways still influence airport design and are the foundation that makes us the world’s busiest airport.
Despite the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, security changes, escalating construction and fuel costs, airline bankruptcies and a global recession, we continue to invest in the region’s economic future.
[an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]
While others froze investments, we completed projects that are paying dividends today, such as our fifth runway. This fall we’ll open a consolidated rental car center to serve travelers for years to come and provide an anchor for College Park’s Gateway Center. In 2012, a new international terminal will accommodate our carriers’ expanding global reach and stimulate the new airport city that will replace the shuttered Ford Hapeville plant.
Our investment in our future will enhance the $23.5 billion impact that the airport makes each year on our region’s economy.
Ben DeCosta is general manager of the Atlanta airport.

Independence-ohio sports News

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - Cleveland center Ben Wallace is considering retirement following the Cavaliers' elimination from the playoffs.
Wallace, a four-time NBA defensive player of the year, said that a combination of injuries, declining production and a loss of passion for the game has him thinking about quitting. He plans to sit down with his family before deciding his next movet.
The 14-year veteran suffered a broken leg this season and suffered from tendinitis in his knees. Wallace has one season left on a contract worth $14 million, but says the money will not be a factor on whether he decides to play another year.
Wallace won an NBA title in 2004 with Detroit.
LeBron happy in Cleveland despite loss
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - LeBron James says not making the NBA finals will have no impact on his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The league MVP can become a free agent in 2010, and there has been rampant speculation that he will sign elsewhere when his contract expires. However, James insists the Cavs' loss to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference finals will not affect his plans.

Films have provided an economic boost to northwest Louisiana

The bad news is lawmakers may pull up short of what's needed to halt the flow of projects to other states.
The governor is content to maintain the current production credit, rejecting the bump to 30 percent that would cost an additional $20 million in a time of budget shortfalls. His administration thus supports the 25 percent credit of HB142 that got out of the House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the film industry has put its spotlight on HB862 by state Rep. Rick Gallot, D-Ruston, that raises the credit to 30 percent on an investment of at least $300,000. State Sen. Robert Adley's SB245 similarly calls for the 30 percent break. Gallot's bill is hung up in committee, while Adley's has gotten past that hurdle and is headed to the Senate floor. Both deserve full hearings.
We've expressed our reluctance to pursue a so-called tax credit arms race but have come around to the idea that the elimination of the infrastructure credit makes the production boost more palatable. In the past four years, films have provided an economic boost to northwest Louisiana. In 2008 there were 23 productions in Shreveport-Bossier City. By March of this year, there had only been two.
The creative energy of films adds to our industrial diversity and has potential for spinning off into parallel realms, from video games to music. Already LSUS has embarked on an animation curriculum.
It's a creative industry we'd like to nurture into taking deeper root.

High pressure sales tips

Q I'd like to report a case we've encountered. In early May, my 19-year-old brother-in-law was approached by a man from World Financial Group in San Jose.
He told my brother-in-law that he was very charismatic and he was looking for Spanish speakers to help promote his business.
He promised my brother-in-law he could make thousands of dollars per month working in financial services without needing a college degree or any experience.
Of course, this was very attractive to my brother-in-law, who is currently working at a fast-food restaurant.
The man was very aggressive in convincing my brother-in-law to consider working for WFG. When my brother-in-law first told me about this, he expressed concern about whether he had fallen for a scam.
My wife and I quickly started searching online for details about World Financial Group and foundsomecases similar to this experience."As sales conventions can be, it seemed a bit hyper, especially toward the end when the 'big' guy started sweating, shouting, preaching about how WFG had made him what he is today — rich, happy, and a nice dresser. I politely sat through the presentation, wondering who exactly all these people were? Potential clients? Potential recruits? Staged bodies?
"My advice is to go to a presentation, see if it is for you, get a business card, think about it, research it, then decide if you're willing to take the plunge.
"If you are a born salesperson, this could be your ticket to riches. But it's not free. The presentation almost dares you to stop being a 'sucker' to the Wal-Marts and the whatever-per-hour job you may have and 'step up' to big money. My advice is to not be impulsive, but to step away from the energy and the hype and just think about it. There's no gun to your head.

Public schools ought to include Washington state

EDUCATION Secretary Arne Duncan's "Listening and Learning" national tour of public schools ought to include Washington state if federal officials are serious about understanding education reform's local impact.
Our state is at a crossroads. An ambitious education plan recently approved by the Legislature was a major hurdle crossed. The next hurdle is a question: where do we go from here?
Debates in this state about education reform rarely rise above the level of money. Granted, it will take a major investment to turn all schools around, but without planning and general consensus, the cash will be useless.
Duncan could learn from this region as well as lend guidance. Federal input wouldn't be intrusive, it would be welcomed. Education stimulus dollars account for the largest spending increase ever. This state will use much of the money to mitigate education cuts imposed by the state Legislature, but millions will be available with varying degrees of flexibility. The new rule in spending should be money spent on unproven efforts is money wasted.
Encouraging signs from Duncan, and President Obama, are the two men's refusal to simply throw money at public education's many problems. The administration is wise to to take its impressive education agenda, which includes early childhood, higher standards, teacher quality, workforce development and higher education, to the people.
Consider this the warm up before Congress delves into reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind law. The massive law should be tweaked, necessary improvements include additional flexibility and monEducation, ey, but not abandoned.

Cigarette and beedi packets was immoral

KARIMNAGAR: Bharatiya Janata Party State president Bandaru Dattatreya said that the Central Government’s decision to print pictures of scorpion and diseased lung on the cigarette and beedi packets was immoral.
Speaking to mediapersons after participating in the district post-poll review meet here today, he maintained that the UPA Government wisely kept the decision in pending till the elections were got over. Had it been introduced before elections, the results would have been different, he averred. He demanded Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy to pressure the UPA government to stick to what he assured beedi workers before the general elections regarding pictorial warnings. Until and unless the Government rolls back its decision we would continue to intensify our agitation, Dattatreya said. The BJP leader maintained that the chief minister should take special interest in the issue as lakhs of people in particular women depending on rolling beedies would be rendered job less.
As for ration cards, he found fault with the State Government’s decision to review faulty ration cards and cancel the bogus ones and sought to know as to how many BPL families were present in the State.
Coming to elections, he blamed that the poor performance of the left parties benefited the Congress in coming to power.
He opined that the utter failure of the Grand Alliance in the State and splitting of votes benefitted the Congress and said that the party’s stand on Telangana would remain unchanged.
Maintaining that BJP has achieved increase in its vote bank in the just-concluded elections, he said that the party was mulling strengthening the party by rejuvenating cadres at the grassroot level. Party secretary NVSS Prasad and Janga Reddy and others were present on the occasion.

Distribution in exchange for dismissal

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Psychedelic rock booms through The Vapour Lounge. In the store, young and some not-so-young people smoke pot through a variety of devices. And owner Marc Emery stands in the middle of it all, proclaiming his goal of defeating the U.S. war on drugs.
Known as the Prince of Pot, Emery has sold millions of marijuana seeds around the world by mail over the past decade. In doing so, he has drawn the attention of U.S. drug officials, who want him extradited to Seattle. Emery has agreed to plead guilty in Seattle to one count of marijuana distribution in exchange for dismissal of all other counts, and the U.S. District Attorney is pressing for a sentence of five to eight years in a U.S. prison.
The case is the latest twist in Emery's two-decade-long fight against the prohibition of marijuana in North America. To his supporters, he is a brave crusader for the use and sale of a drug with both recreational and medicinal value. To drug officials, he is a criminal and the biggest purveyor of marijuana from Canada into the United States.
Emery sits "right smack in the middle" of the North American debate over marijuana prohibition, said Allen St. Pierre of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws in Washington, D.C. St. Pierre predicted that Emery's trial would "kick-start it all again."
But drug officials say they are simply going after one of the world's top 50 drug traffickers. U.S. authorities claim Emery's seeds have grown $2.2 billion worth of pot.
"We've been very clear it had nothing to do with Mr. Emery's political stand," said Emily Langlie of the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Seattle.

Americans much better automobiles

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT: Henry Ford started at the beginning of the last century with four wheels and a running board; 1908 was the birth of American car culture. That same year, General Motors was formed in Flint, Michigan. It wasn't until 1925 when the "Big Three" was complete with the formation of Chrysler Corporation.
JOHN DAVIS, HOST, MOTORWEEK: When the Big Three emerged, they not only emerged as rivals that really gave Americans much better automobiles at the time, but they also cemented the American automobile as a world standard.
ROMANS: "As goes General Motors, so goes the nation." That phrase defined America's economic power for much of the last century.
PETER MORICI, ECONOMIST, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND: So many folks were either employed at General Motors or the other two major car makers, making steel and all the other components that go into cars. It just meant that if the automobile companies were prospering, the country was prospering, too.
ROMANS: Today, there are 74,000 rank-and-file GM workers in the U.S. But in its heyday, GM was the largest industrial company in the world; a technology leader. By 1979, 600,000 people worked for GM. Those good jobs helped build America's middle class.
DAVIS: It also allowed us to migrate out from the cities to have the quarter lot in a suburb, to basically get away from a lot of the congestion of the metropolitan areas.

Popular high-deductible insurance plans

Health care providers around the Triad are finding that increasingly popular high-deductible insurance plans are leading to difficulty collecting payments from patients.
The plans come with a deductible of anywhere from $1,150 to $5,800 that allows employers and enrollees to keep their premiums down. Many of the plans are tied to health savings accounts (HSAs) that employers or patients can fund with tax-deductible deposits to help pay those out-of-pocket costs.
But doctors are seeing that, given the troubled economy, patients are paying bills and buying necessities before they fund their accounts. It’s creating a new class of patient: one who’s insured but can’t afford up-front costs before coverage kicks in.
Fran Sembert, director of managed care for Greensboro-based multispecialty group Eagle Physicians & Associates, said insurance companies won’t allow doctors to collect on high deductibles until the insurer fully processes the claim, which can take 30 to 45 days.

Dubai plans to launch its second government-run airline

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Arab sheikdoms eager for higher international profiles are ratcheting up their aviation race despite the global economic slump.
On Monday, the city-state Dubai plans to launch its second government-run airline — the third major carrier this decade to spring from the United Arab Emirates, a country of less than a million people. The new low-cost airline will cater to budget travelers in a region better known for opulence than bargains.
Unlike their counterparts elsewhere, other Persian Gulf airlines vow to stick to plane delivery schedules, as their deep-pocketed patrons push ahead with ambitious airport expansions. The head of one Gulf carrier has even hinted at another headline-grabbing order at the upcoming Paris Air Show.
The climb to the skies reflects the Gulf nations' drive to re-brand themselves as more than just oil-rich monarchies. Qatar for example is morphing into a research hub because of its natural gas wealth, while Abu Dhabi aims to become a cultural capital on the back of its petrodollars.
But concerns are growing — particularly now that the global economic downturn has undermined demand for long-haul and premium air travel. Some analysts wonder if the region's airlines are stuffing their fleets too quickly with too many planes, much like Dubai's overzealous developers raced to build luxury apartment blocks that now largely stand empty.
"Absent continuing growth in construction and services, you really don't need all those seats," said Bob Mann, an independent airline consultant. "It's the rate of capacity growth that's the question."
The rapid expansion is redrawing the world's air routes: It is now easier to fly from Houston to Dubai or the Qatari capital Doha than to Rome or Beijing. Gulf carriers, which typically boast more generous in-flight services than Western competitors, enjoy increased business even as traffic falls most everywhere else.

Important to women at different stages

Different things are important to women at different stages in their lives. To a 21-year-old woman, for example, being invited to the party of the year may occupy her waking moments while to a 41-year-old mum, encouraging her children to do their homework may be of greater importance.
The same applies to beauty. A 21-year-old woman’s beauty problems often differ from those of a 41-year-old. Below are some beauty tips that will come in handy at whatever age.
20’s
• Acne is a common skin problem in youth. It is often associated with the activity of hormones and usually, the problem resolves itself with time. There are several products available to help control acne. A good one to try is the Clean & Clear Advantage range of products.
• This may be the time to try out different wild makeup looks but it’s also the time to take care of your skin. Always remove makeup completely from your face before going to bed.
30’s
• For some women, acne persists with the years. If it’s just a mild case of pimples appearing from time to time, try something like Clinique’s Acne Solutions – a 3-step system to treat acne-prone skin. If it’s severe, see a dermatologist. Cleanse and moisturise your face morning and night to keep it looking young.
40’s
• The skin changes as the years go by, especially that on the face. This is owing to various factors from environmental pollution to damage from the sun, and hormonal issues. Change your foundation to suit the current colour and texture of your skin.
• Avoid the powder form of makeup, as the particles tend to settle into lines and muscles. Switch to cream makeup but avoid creamy, shimmery eyeshadows, as they draw attention to wrinkles.

Founded in 2000, as First Communities Realty, specializing in the conversion of rental apartment communities to “for sale” condominiums in the Atlanta market, the firm under the guidance of CEO Darlys Walker has evolved into one of the leading firms for both apartment owners and condominium associations in the region, with more than 13,000 units currently under management.
The property management entity for rental communities operates under the DBA of Community Concepts Management, and was most recently the firm selected by Coro Realty Advisors, LLC as the management agent for the highly visible, luxury “white glove” rental, 05 Buckhead.
As one of Coro Realty Advisors’ newest communities, 05 Buckhead is a state-of-the-art, 20-story high-end luxury rental in the heart of Buckhead. Pre-leasing of the 155 units began in February, with the Grand Opening on May 7th. “This building is a huge departure from the typical Atlanta rental community. With rental rates starting in the $2 per foot range, the resident profile is an affluent, sophisticated and savvy individual or couple. Their needs are diverse, as are their expectations as it relates not only to the product, but services,” Walker noted. “To date, we are well ahead of our occupancy projections, and our full service staff has been specifically trained to respond to the needs and demands of this discerning clientele.”
Patti Pearlberg, Vice President and Asset Manager for Coro Realty Advisors, LLC, expanded on Community Concepts management services and involvement with 05 Buckhead. “I have known Darlys Walker for years, and was aware of organization’s background in multi-family management.

Most saturated in terms of real estate

The Assocham Business Barometer report is based on a survey of 25 real estate firms conducted between May 15 and May 25.
The survey report said a whopping 92 percent of chief executives considered affordable housing to kindle demand in the real estate sector, with about 84 percent saying this segment had been least impacted by falling demand.
It said while the luxury housing segment witnessed a demand contraction of over 50 percent, special economic zones (SEZs) by about 40-50 percent, retail space between 30-40 percent and commercial space by 20-30 percent, affordable housing was the most resilient segment seeing a contraction of 10 percent or less.
The chief executives called for sought single-window clearances for all schemes under affordable housing, as is done with SEZ proposals, to bridge the shortfall of about 2.6 crore dwelling units at the earliest.
About 76 percent of the respondents said the stimulus given to the sector through fiscal and monetary measures was inadequate.
Of all policy measures, 64 percent of respondents were of the view that the central bank’s move to allow banks to restructure loans to developers has been the most successful in improving liquidity for the real estate sector.
Additionally, 60 percent said a resurgent stock market would be the most prominent source of finance for the sector, while 28 percent thought bank credit was the most viable option.
Hefty funds raised through the qualified institutional placement route in the stock market (exceeding Rs.8,000 crore) along with debt restructuring would allow the developers to address their liquidity concerns.
Mumbai has been ranked as the most saturated in terms of real estate assets followed by Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Looking for truly valuable books

The second 50 years of Illinois' largest annual used book sale is set kick off its 10 days of bibliophile-heaven June 5 in the parking lot at Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie.
For decades, the Brandeis Book Sale brought book lovers and even collectors from the region and outside the area to Skokie's shopping center in search of great deals on used books all underneath large yellow tents. Some came simply looking to compile a summer of good reads; others came looking for truly valuable books, special ones for their personal or professional collections.
When Brandeis finally walked away from the book sale a few years ago, book lovers feared that the last chapter of the sale had been written and the epilogue was all but over.
But then came the Little City Foundation in 2007 to take over the sale, not so much to write a sequel to the Brandeis chapters but to put its own stamp on what Brandeis began so many years ago. The large tents remain, and under those tents are still thousands of books of all genres. And Little City, recognizing the changing times, has increased its offerings of comic books, DVDs, CDs and even vinyl records for nostalgia buffs.
"The used book sale has had a loyal following since it was founded as the Brandeis Book Sale more than half a century ago," said Little City Executive Director Shawn Jeffers.
This year's sale is scheduled from June 5-14. Opening night hours are 5 to 10 p.m. The sale is then open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 8 to June 11, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 12 and June 13 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 14.
While many businesses have been hurting because of the ailing economy, book sale planners believe that that won't be the case here."In this economy, people don't have as much money," said Little City Used Book Sale Marketing Manager Julie Schmaus. "I think they're looking to find bargains and save money, and the book sale is where they can do that."

Panama treaty are nothing

If unions like the Teamsters and the AFL-CIO were honest, they’d admit that their real agenda isn’t taxes, labor laws or a need for a “new framework,” whatever that is. They’d just admit they’re against free trade no matter what.
Their unending objections to the Panama treaty are nothing but a bid to kill the pact through delays. They’ve been pretty successful at this so far, putting the deal on hold for two years.
The administration, however, has moved swiftly to get the pact done by July 1, extending a good-faith bid to labor so an acceptable outcome can be reached for all. Panama is doing its part by making concessions that stretch the definitional limits of free trade.
But instead of working with the president, Big Labor only presents new demands. The AFL-CIO’s congressional testimony reflects this.
The new gripes? We now learn that overtime rates for canal-zone workers are “only” 25% instead of a Detroit-like 75%, that Panama’s nationality law conflicts with U.N. standards and that free trade is the reason for the U.S. trade deficit. Worst of all: the pact was negotiated under George Bush.
The new objections are pretty contorted in the face of facts. Panama’s best-paying jobs, for example, are in the canal zone, where few workers want unions. The U.S. has a $4.2 billion surplus with Panama that will rise as it does in all free trade countries. And the pact was negotiated by U.S. Trade Representative pros, not Bush.
But that isn’t stopping the Teamsters’ James Hoffa. Fresh from losing as many as 44,000 American jobs over the Mexican truck shutout, he claims the Panama pact will increase unemployment. It’s the opposite: Three months ago, 20,000 Caterpillar workers were laid off as the U.S. economy tanked.
Caterpillar will need to rehire those union workers if it wins new contracts for earthmovers. There’s a $4 billion Panama Canal expansion going on with contracts up for bids. Without the pact, Caterpillar equipment is subject to 20% tariffs. Nonunion Chinese workers could easily get this work while UAW workers stand in unemployment lines.

Emirates and Mauritius to perform ‘yagnas’

Restrained from going abroad for his alleged role in a clutch of criminal cases, including Lakhu Bhai Pathak cheating case involving former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Chandraswami will be going abroad after a gap of 14 years.
The spiritual guru had been seeking permission to go abroad to Britain, United Arab Emirates and Mauritius to perform ‘yagnas’ (special prayers) at the residences of some of his disciples.
The apex court allowed Chandraswami to go abroad after dismissing the Enforcement Directorate’s objection to the rulings of a trial court and the Delhi High Court subsequently, which had allowed him to go abroad.
Chandraswami faces prosecution by the Enforcement Directorate in 11 cases of allegedly violating the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA).
The directorate challenged the trial court’s order granting him permission to travel abroad. The Delhi High Court too eventually allowed him to go abroad, dismissing the directorate’s fears that he might not come back to face trial.
Allowing Chandraswami’s plea to go abroad, the high court had asked him to pledge Rs.1 million per case as surety.
The Supreme Court subsequently on Feb 12 had suspended the high court order, which the apex court restored Thursday with a slight modification.
On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate counsel Wasim Ahmed Qadri, while opposing Chandraswami’s plea, had told the court that he is also suspected to have a role in funding the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.
This prompted the court to ask him: “If he has funded the assassination, then why did you not proceed against him?”
Earlier on Feb 26, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian had told an apex court judge B.N. Agrawal that Chandraswami owes penalty to the tune of Rs.80 million for violation of various foreign exchange control laws.

Samsung India deputy MD R Zutshi

"Indian consumers are evolving rapidly in their lifestyle. Since the craving for healthcare products is growing, LG India wishes to be a pioneer in the healthcare white goods segment. Water and air pollution can be identified as potential categories for new health products in India. Our air purifiers will hit the market by Diwali," LG Electronics India MD Moon B. Shin told ET.
LG India recently launched a portfolio of home appliances which are targeted at health-conscious consumers. These include microwave ovens with a health menu, refrigerator which can preserve vitamin C in vegetables up to 70%, washing machines with steam technology that eliminates allergens, mites and residual detergent.
Similarly, Samsung has rolled out laptops with anti-bacterial keyboards, washing machines that remove bacteria and bio-ceramic enamel cavity in microwave oven which preserves food nutrition. The company’s India R&D team has developed a technology — for which it has applied a patent — that preserves food in refrigerator during a power cut.
"Given the growing health consciousness in Indian consumers, we want to introduce technologies that are health friendly and offers a value to consumers beyond their mere functionality. Through advertising, we will aggressively communicate the consumer benefit of these new technologies," said Samsung India deputy MD R Zutshi.
Philips India plans to develop a portfolio of products in areas like home healthcare and consumer lifestyle. "We have developed water purifiers specifically for India and rolling out a new line of nutrition-oriented small appliances like juicer. We will drive a lot of initiatives on the retail level to solidify our health proposition," Philips Electronics India MD & CEO Murali Sivaraman said.
Godrej Appliances head (marketing and sales) Kamal Nandi said the company’s water purifier will launched pan-India in six months. "We have adopted the direct selling model for healthcare products. The water purifiers are currently sold in few markets like Mumbai. We are working on a slew of other health products," he said.
The size of healthcare white goods market in India is estimated at Rs 1,500-1,800 crore. The market is highly fragmented and is emerging to be the next big opportunity for the big companies.

Health care reform will be finalized this year

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- If President Obama has his way, health care reform will be finalized this year. Key Senate and House committees are planning to mark up legislation in June, and the House is aiming to vote on the issue by August.
And while the specifics of how to fix the nation's health care system are far from final, the debate over how to pull it off will turn on a key question: How to pay for it.
The total cost of overhauling health care is estimated at over $1 trillion, and the administration has made it clear that it doesn't want the overhaul to add to the already giant federal budget deficit.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., one of the leading legislative players on the issue, last week laid out the likely elements in any health reform package. He also identified some of the main options for how to pay for it.
A system overhaul will guarantee coverage for most of the 47 million people currently uninsured, Baucus said at a Kaiser Family Foundation forum. And there's a good chance that a government-funded public health plan option will be added to the mix of plans offered by private insurers, Baucus said.
The final legislation is also expected to lay out requirements for minimum benefits; prohibitions against denying someone coverage due to a pre-existing condition; and guarantees for affordable, quality health care, he said.
House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., another key player, echoed what Baucus outlined at a National Coalition on Health Care conference on Wednesday.
In terms of reimbursing doctors and hospitals, the focus for insurers is likely to shift from paying for the volume of services provided to reimbursements based on positive health our outcomes.

Travel agents write to Air France

A day after 53 Indians spent an entire night in the basement immigration hall of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport, the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has written a letter to Air France seeking an explanation from the carrier.
“I had one of my lady passengers who witnessed racial discrimination recently on a flight from New York,” said Vasuki Sundaram, secretary of TAFI’s western chapter. “It was one of those relatively empty flights and the airhostess was asking all passengers whether they would prefer to shift to seats which had more leg room.
While she asked all the ‘whites’ for their preference, she conveniently ignored this lady. Only when the lady raised a hue and cry that she had paid as much as the others for the tickets did the airhostess ask her,” added Sundaram.
“Earlier Indians used to be scared to speak out. I’ve had this experience on a flight when the airhostess was smiling at everybody but stopped smiling when she looke at me,” said Sundaram.
“Therefore when we read about yesterday’s incident, we wrote a letter to the carrier seeking an explanation. It looks like a case of racial discrimination,” she added.
However, the question that remains is are Indians still keen to travel European carriers despite the opening up of the Indian skies and the plethora of choices available to them in terms of international connectivity. “There has definitely been a shift,” said Sundaram. “Earlier the psychology of Indians was that foreign airlines provide better service but now even the Air India Mumbai-NY flight is good,” she said.

We would like to expand our destinations-Maathias limbeck

ISTANBUL - The Association of Real Estate Investment Companies, or GYODER, announced that the 9th Real Estate Summit, starting June 2 in Istanbul, will involve a different concept.
Speaking at a press meeting yesterday, GYODER Chairman Turgay Tanes said this year’s summit will be organized with the partnership of Reed Exhibitions, under the name of "Istanbul REstate."
"This meeting will be the first international participation fair for Turkey’s regional real estate. It will be different from the past because the fair and the summit will be simultaneous," said Tanes.
"There will be more than 100 projects and participants have readied at least $10 billion-worth of projects," he said, adding that Vienna Mayor Michael Haupl and Austria’s former finance minister, Wolfgang Schmitz, will also attend the fair. "We are also expecting participation from the Turkic republics, the Gulf and southern and eastern Europe. This fair will be the biggest global fair for the sector in the past few years." Istanbul is the third most suitable city for real estate investments, Tanes said.
"We would like to expand our destinations," said Maathias Limbeck, general manager of Reed Exhibitions. "Istanbul is an intersection point for all Europe. In this fair we are targeting the Mediterranean, middle Asia and northern European markets."
Limbeck said they are expecting the participation of 20 top investors from all over the world, adding that a hypermarket chain is also interested in Turkey.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa team's decision to threaten

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has backed his team's decision to threaten to quit Formula One over the FIA's two-tier rules fiasco the Brazilian labelled absurd.
Renault yesterday joined Ferrari in looking to walk away unless the recently-adopted regulations for next season are revised.
Like the Italian company, Renault have derided the FIA for failing to consult with teams on the £40million budget cap and have also called into question the governance of the sport.
The teams now face showdown talks with motor sport's world governing body president Max Mosley tomorrow.
And Massa said: "I understand the motivation, why the company got to this point.
"The idea of having a championship with two velocities, with cars, which for example are allowed to have flexible wings or an engine without a rev limiter, is absurd."We've already seen this year that the rules' uncertainty (relating to the double diffuser) not only led to a lot of confusion for us involved but mainly for the fans. Imagine what might happen with what has been set up for 2010." Fellow Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen is also at a loss to understand the two-tier system.
The 2007 world champion said:"It's difficult to think of a Formula One without Ferrari.
"When I drove for McLaren the Scuderia were the benchmark, the competitor you had to be compared with.
"Since I arrived here I have understood it is much more than just a team - it's a legend, perpetuated via its road and racing cars.
"I can't imagine drivers racing each other on the track with cars built according to different rules. That wouldn't be good for the sport itself or for the fans.

Lemon content drinks

THE SUMMER is here and so is the season of ice creams and cold drinks. The market of ice creams in India every year touches new sky due to its growing popularity among various age groups. However, this time ice cream has a major competitor- lemon drinks. Lemon market, which was considered to be under the unorganised sector, has suddenly come under the the organised sector with the entry of some of the big market players.
Many big brands are taking lemon as a new concept to increase their base of clients. There has been enough media coverage on the war between the colas in the market. But suddenly a simple lemonade has sidelined hi-fi aerated drinks. Two years back, Amul, India's milk product major, was the first company to highlight the use of lemon in its ice cream products by introducing a Vitamin C rich flavour. Mother Dairy followed the suit. Lemon has not been new to India. The lemon tree is one of the oldest cultivated fruit plants, originated from India. The Indians have been using in different forms.
One of the most used product in the dishes of many house holds have been the pickle and the lemons have been one of the gradients of the pickle.

Beware:Before teleshopping

I have always loved buying things online. It is not just for the great deals you get out there, but for the sheer ease with which you could do it. I have been indulging in this surreal escapism for long until I discovered a phishing scam.
A couple of weeks ago, I was idly browsing through my online statement when one of the entries caught my attention. It said PlanPlus and the credit card charge was for $19.95. I raked my brains. Was it one of those tele-shopping network companies from where you can get the weirdest of things like a hand-held steamer that can be packed into a suitcase and dog biscuits shaped like cats? A few entries down the page and I saw another one. This time it was Savings2Go and the charge was for $19.95.
As the red light began to flash, I called up my bank. I was told that these charges have been appearing on my account for the past three months. Three months and they have gone under the radar undetected? A careful investigation revealed that some merchant sites carry innocuous links that capture your credit card data. Companies use this information and make small charges to your credit card account month after month. The charges are deliberately kept small and may be split into multiple charges to ward off suspicion. I googled the names of these companies and found that they both operated under the same management, Stonebridge Benefits Services company, and shared a 1800 number.
