Travel agents write to Air France

A day after 53 Indians spent an entire night in the basement immigration hall of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport, the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has written a letter to Air France seeking an explanation from the carrier.
“I had one of my lady passengers who witnessed racial discrimination recently on a flight from New York,” said Vasuki Sundaram, secretary of TAFI’s western chapter. “It was one of those relatively empty flights and the airhostess was asking all passengers whether they would prefer to shift to seats which had more leg room.
While she asked all the ‘whites’ for their preference, she conveniently ignored this lady. Only when the lady raised a hue and cry that she had paid as much as the others for the tickets did the airhostess ask her,” added Sundaram.
“Earlier Indians used to be scared to speak out. I’ve had this experience on a flight when the airhostess was smiling at everybody but stopped smiling when she looke at me,” said Sundaram.
“Therefore when we read about yesterday’s incident, we wrote a letter to the carrier seeking an explanation. It looks like a case of racial discrimination,” she added.
However, the question that remains is are Indians still keen to travel European carriers despite the opening up of the Indian skies and the plethora of choices available to them in terms of international connectivity. “There has definitely been a shift,” said Sundaram. “Earlier the psychology of Indians was that foreign airlines provide better service but now even the Air India Mumbai-NY flight is good,” she said.

We would like to expand our destinations-Maathias limbeck

ISTANBUL - The Association of Real Estate Investment Companies, or GYODER, announced that the 9th Real Estate Summit, starting June 2 in Istanbul, will involve a different concept.
Speaking at a press meeting yesterday, GYODER Chairman Turgay Tanes said this year’s summit will be organized with the partnership of Reed Exhibitions, under the name of "Istanbul REstate."
"This meeting will be the first international participation fair for Turkey’s regional real estate. It will be different from the past because the fair and the summit will be simultaneous," said Tanes.
"There will be more than 100 projects and participants have readied at least $10 billion-worth of projects," he said, adding that Vienna Mayor Michael Haupl and Austria’s former finance minister, Wolfgang Schmitz, will also attend the fair. "We are also expecting participation from the Turkic republics, the Gulf and southern and eastern Europe. This fair will be the biggest global fair for the sector in the past few years." Istanbul is the third most suitable city for real estate investments, Tanes said.
"We would like to expand our destinations," said Maathias Limbeck, general manager of Reed Exhibitions. "Istanbul is an intersection point for all Europe. In this fair we are targeting the Mediterranean, middle Asia and northern European markets."
Limbeck said they are expecting the participation of 20 top investors from all over the world, adding that a hypermarket chain is also interested in Turkey.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa team's decision to threaten

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has backed his team's decision to threaten to quit Formula One over the FIA's two-tier rules fiasco the Brazilian labelled absurd.
Renault yesterday joined Ferrari in looking to walk away unless the recently-adopted regulations for next season are revised.
Like the Italian company, Renault have derided the FIA for failing to consult with teams on the £40million budget cap and have also called into question the governance of the sport.
The teams now face showdown talks with motor sport's world governing body president Max Mosley tomorrow.
And Massa said: "I understand the motivation, why the company got to this point.
"The idea of having a championship with two velocities, with cars, which for example are allowed to have flexible wings or an engine without a rev limiter, is absurd."We've already seen this year that the rules' uncertainty (relating to the double diffuser) not only led to a lot of confusion for us involved but mainly for the fans. Imagine what might happen with what has been set up for 2010." Fellow Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen is also at a loss to understand the two-tier system.
The 2007 world champion said:"It's difficult to think of a Formula One without Ferrari.
"When I drove for McLaren the Scuderia were the benchmark, the competitor you had to be compared with.
"Since I arrived here I have understood it is much more than just a team - it's a legend, perpetuated via its road and racing cars.
"I can't imagine drivers racing each other on the track with cars built according to different rules. That wouldn't be good for the sport itself or for the fans.

Lemon content drinks

THE SUMMER is here and so is the season of ice creams and cold drinks. The market of ice creams in India every year touches new sky due to its growing popularity among various age groups. However, this time ice cream has a major competitor- lemon drinks. Lemon market, which was considered to be under the unorganised sector, has suddenly come under the the organised sector with the entry of some of the big market players.
Many big brands are taking lemon as a new concept to increase their base of clients. There has been enough media coverage on the war between the colas in the market. But suddenly a simple lemonade has sidelined hi-fi aerated drinks. Two years back, Amul, India's milk product major, was the first company to highlight the use of lemon in its ice cream products by introducing a Vitamin C rich flavour. Mother Dairy followed the suit. Lemon has not been new to India. The lemon tree is one of the oldest cultivated fruit plants, originated from India. The Indians have been using in different forms.
One of the most used product in the dishes of many house holds have been the pickle and the lemons have been one of the gradients of the pickle.

Beware:Before teleshopping

I have always loved buying things online. It is not just for the great deals you get out there, but for the sheer ease with which you could do it. I have been indulging in this surreal escapism for long until I discovered a phishing scam.
A couple of weeks ago, I was idly browsing through my online statement when one of the entries caught my attention. It said PlanPlus and the credit card charge was for $19.95. I raked my brains. Was it one of those tele-shopping network companies from where you can get the weirdest of things like a hand-held steamer that can be packed into a suitcase and dog biscuits shaped like cats? A few entries down the page and I saw another one. This time it was Savings2Go and the charge was for $19.95.
As the red light began to flash, I called up my bank. I was told that these charges have been appearing on my account for the past three months. Three months and they have gone under the radar undetected? A careful investigation revealed that some merchant sites carry innocuous links that capture your credit card data. Companies use this information and make small charges to your credit card account month after month. The charges are deliberately kept small and may be split into multiple charges to ward off suspicion. I googled the names of these companies and found that they both operated under the same management, Stonebridge Benefits Services company, and shared a 1800 number.

Mortgage rates are beginning to rebound

Procrastinators beware: Mortgage rates are beginning to rebound from record lows as the U.S. economy shows more and more signs of stabilizing.
“Rates are still low, but they’ve moved up from the super-low point they hit a few weeks back,” said Greg McBride of market-tracker Bankrate.com.
Average conforming-loan rates shot up a quarter-point in just two days last week, hitting 5.5 percent on Friday for zero-point fixed-rate mortgages given to well-qualified applicants. That’s up 0.375 points from an all-time-low 5.125 percent average rate Bankrate.com recorded early last month.
Then, the Labor Department reported Friday that America lost 539,000 non-farm jobs in April - 61,000 less than many analysts had forecast.
The three better-than-expected reports pushed mortgage rates higher as lenders priced in a possible economic recovery that could raise loan demand and increase inflation.
“The economic glass is now being seen as half full instead of half empty,” McBride said.
Although the analyst expects rates to fluctuate in coming months, McBride recommends would-be borrowers not wait to see if interest levels drop back downward.
After all, McBride said today’s rates are still well below the market’s 7.5 percent long-term average.
In addition, he said, some refinancers who qualify for loans today might not do so tomorrow if home values keep falling.
“People who wait to refinance could win the battle but lose the war,” McBride said. “If the value of your house drops and you no longer qualify to refinance, it doesn’t matter how low rates go.”

consultants and commercial real estate agents

It depends, say small-business consultants and commercial real-estate agents. Always research the background of space that?s up for rent or sale, they say. There?s a story behind almost every available storefront or former restaurant. Maybe the previous tenant left due to poor management, ill health or a divorce?and through no fault of the site itself. But if there?s a problem specific to the location, then, as philosopher Edmund Burke is often quoted, ?Those who don?t know history are destined to repeat it.?
Investigating the reason for the last tenant?s exit is essential, says Scott Bloom, a New York City commercial real-estate agent who specializes in Manhattan properties. ?Smart businesspeople ask about attractive space that may seem all too available. They want to know, ?Why am I so lucky?? And they should wonder.?
Ask Questions
Among the right questions: Did new competition play a role? Did customer traffic in the neighborhood decline, and why? Are there structural or serious maintenance issues in the space, and if so can they be corrected before a new lease is signed? Further, does the location have any negative image from the previous business that could turn off potential customers? If the former tenant can?t be questioned first-hand, talk to the real-estate agent or owner of the building. Tina Wallace, a commercial real-estate agent in Chicago, says she encourages the owners of her listings to tell what they know. ?I always ask,? she says. But prospective tenants often don?t, she adds.
Some owners hold back information, says Ms. Wallace, and some are in the dark themselves. ?Sometimes we have locations that had been occupied by lemon after lemon, and the building?s owner doesn?t even know what happened?tenants just move out overnight,? she says
To get a landlord to talk, Ms. Wallace and other real-estate agents suggest telling them that it?s essential for you to know some details about the prior business and its exit or there will be no deal. Tell them it?s better to risk losing a prospective tenant than to hide issues that might cause you to abruptly abandon the location in the near future.

Lower rates growth in pakistan

The central bank last month cut borrowing costs for the first time since 2002, reducing its benchmark rate to 14 percent from 15 percent. Lower rates may help prop up growth in Pakistan, which is struggling to deal with Islamic insurgents and a crumbling economy.
“The inflation trend shows that the central bank’s rate- cut decision was timely,” said Asif Qureshi, head of research at Invisor Securities Ltd. in Karachi. “Easing inflation will help the country regain some economic stability amid very difficult conditions.”
International donors meeting in Tokyo last month pledged more than $5 billion to help Pakistan shore up its ailing finances and fight terrorism. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on May 7 vowed to eliminate Taliban gunmen who have advanced to within 100 kilometers (60 miles) of the capital Islamabad.
State Bank of Pakistan predicts inflation may ease to 11 percent by June. Former Governor Shamshad Akhtar last year increased the central bank’s key rate to the highest in more than a decade to slow inflation and help shore up the nation’s foreign-exchange reserves.
The country was forced to turn to the International Monetary Fund for a $7.6 billion rescue package in November after its reserves shrank 75 percent in a year to $3.45 billion.
Higher borrowing costs have dented growth in the economy, which is predicted by the government to expand 2.5 percent in the year to June 30, down from 5.8 percent last year.

The travel initiative requires

There are still a few loose ends, but officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection say they will be ready on June 1, the day the United States fully implements the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
And people in both countries know the pre-9/11 days are gone when they could simply tell a border agent who they were and go from one country to another. Most people crossing the border now already have all the required documents, officials said.
The travel initiative requires everyone entering the U.S. to have specialized documents, like passports or special driver's licenses, that prove who they are and where they're from.
Unlike the run-up to the Feb. 1, 2008 date when the U.S. stopped letting people enter based solely on their word, there is little concern the new rules will stifle trade and tourism between Vermont and Quebec and the U.S. and Canada.
"When I look back at where we were a couple of years ago when they were going to roll this out, there's no way they were ready for it," said Bill Stenger, the president of the Jay Peak ski resort, just south of the border, which relies heavily on Canadian skiers and summer tourists.
U.S. Homeland Security had intended to require the complete documentation on June 1, 2008, but delayed the implementation after howls of complaints from officials in border states.
"I think it's been very helpful for everybody involved," said James McMillan, the CBP port director for Highgate Springs, at the top of Interstate 89.
In the last year, CBP installed scanners at most of Vermont's border crossings that can read chips in enhanced driver's licenses - issued by more and more states and provinces - and special passport cards, which are much less expensive than traditional passports. The scanners shave seconds off the time every person spends at the border, McMillan said.
"At the same time it's also given the public a chance to get accustomed to having to carry certain documents," McMillan said.
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., helped pass the legislation that delayed full implementation.
"The extra time has helped avert a major mess at the border," Leahy said. "That would have been an economic shock wave that would have hurt Vermont and other border states. Federal agencies today are better prepared and more Canadian visitors are aware that the change is coming."

Hot rod and muscle car ride

Participants in the first-ever Cruisin’ Cajun Country could have driven their Mustangs, Corvettes and classic trucks anywhere this weekend.
But for them there was no better place for sight-seeing and entertainment than the Teche Area.
“People can go anywhere around here and do great things,” said Carolyn Broussard of New Iberia, whose husband helped to coordinate the event. “There’s just a lot of culture here. "The four-day hot rod and muscle car ride kicked off Thursday with more than 100 cars cruising the area to raise money for Iberia Habitat for Humanity.
The event is based off of an annual Biloxi, Miss., ride that cruises the Gulf Coast, and event coordinators here hope this event gets bigger and better every year.
“There’s not as many cars as we’d hoped for, but it’s still a great turnout for our first year,” said Jim Chauvin, one of the ride’s coordinators.
Participants have been showing off their classic cars by cruising to different tourist attractions, including Jefferson Island, Avery Island and Cypress Bayou Casino, and also have been provided with food and live music from the towns of Broussard and Abbeville.

Amit singh is the second rajasthan player

Amit Singh is the second Rajasthan player in trouble © Associated Press
Rajasthan Royals right-arm medium-fast bowler Amit Singh has been reported for a suspect bowling action for the second time in the IPL. On-field umpires Gary Baxter and Kumar Dharmasena reported Amit, citing his suspect bowling action on certain deliveries, during Rajasthan's match against the Chennai Super Kings in Kimberley on Saturday.
The matter has now been referred by the IPL to the Rajasthan team management and the tournament's technical committee as per the Laws of Cricket that govern the game, the organisers said in a statement today.
On completion of the match, footage was obtained and re-examined by all the three match officials, including third umpire Amiesh Saheba, and it was decided that further action was necessary under the Laws of Cricket section 24.3 that governs the game.
Amit had earlier been reported by umpires Daryl Harper and K Hariharan after Rajasthan's match against Royal Challengers Bangalore last Thursday. He is the second bowler, after team-mate Kamran Khan, to be reported for a suspect action in the second season.
Amit, who can continue to play until he is proven guilty of an illegal action, is Rajasthan's third-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets from three matches at 6.62.

Educational news

Bhopal: Shocked by the declining pass percentage in Madhya Pradesh's high school examinations, state Education Minister Archana Chitnis has ordered a high-level probe to find out the reasons for the poor results, official sources said.
After reaching a record high of 57.88 pass percentage last year, only 35.33 percent of regular students passed the 2009 examination, conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE).
The performance by private students was even more dismal, with only 8.9 percent of them
passing, compared to 25.07 percent last year.
The probe committee has been asked to submit its report within a fortnight.
Soon after the declaration of results Saturday, Chitnis chaired a departmental meeting to find out the reasons for the poor show and even directed officials to initiate a process to exclude teachers engaged in board classes from election duty, an official present at the meeting told sources on condition of anonymity.
"The minister held election duty of teachers in both assembly (in 2008) and the current parliamentary elections responsible for the poor results. She said for the next year books had been made available in all government schools before the commencement of the session from April 1, and thus the results are expected to improve," the official said.
Chitnis is also said to have apprised Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan of her decision.
MPBSE secretary in charge Snehlata Srivastava straight away blamed the prolonged election process and insufficient training for teachers in accordance with the changed syllabi for the decline in the pass percentage.

marketing basic rules

* "I need paying clients."
* "How do I get new clients?"
* "I struggle to make my marketing work."
* "I don't know where to start with marketing."
* "I hate marketing and marketing myself feels horrendous."
If you hear yourself saying any of these, then I've written this ebook especially for you. I'm asked by many business owners how they can gain clients quickly for their service-based businesses. They're either just starting their business and don't know how to market themselves and their services, or if they have an existing business, they may have done some marketing but find it a real struggle and lots of hard work. The struggle comes from not personally enjoying the marketing or because they're not getting the results they want, i.e., a stream of new clients.
When you're in business, whatever that might be, you're also in the business of marketing your services. Like it or not, marketing is essential to your business and will, in some ways, always be a part of it. Therefore, you need to find a way of marketing which suits you, your style and which you actually enjoy.
I truly believe you can find marketing that is enjoyable for you. At one time, I didn't believe I would ever enjoy it. I thought it was a necessary evil, but now, not only do I love it but I work with other business people to develop their marketing!
When I speak with most people about marketing, they often say, "It just isn't me" or "I don't feel okay doing it". They feel that to even do some marketing, let alone become really good at it, pulls them out of shape personally and feels awkward. I believe this to be the case when you haven't identified your natural marketing style. There is a way to market that suits you quite naturally, which feels right for you, and I encourage you to discover it.
I do appreciate how you currently feel about marketing. I had no marketing background so I was completely naïve when it came to marketing my business. I floundered around for longer than I care to remember and at the back of my mind, I hoped that new clients would appear as if by magic, so that I would never need to do any marketing again. I did say I was naïve back then!!
It took me a long time before I realised that marketing was something I would always be doing, so I might as well find a way to enjoy it. This ebook is a brief overview of all that you need to consider when marketing and is founded on what I've learned over many years. Most of this learning has come from actually doing the marketing in my own businesses. Even today, my technique isn't perfect and I still make mistakes, but I just keep learning, moving forward and gaining a deeper understanding of all that's required to market effectively.
